Guide To Buying Body Boards
Bodyboards are a fun and accessible way to enjoy the water, whether you are catching small waves at the beach, introducing children to wave riding, or building confidence before progressing to surfboards. Designed to be ridden lying down or in a kneeling position, a bodyboard offers stability, control, and extra buoyancy, making it suitable for beginners, families, and more confident riders alike.
Compared to larger surfboards, bodyboards are easier to handle, lighter to carry, and quicker to learn on. Choosing the right bodyboard helps improve balance, safety, and overall enjoyment in the water.

Bodyboards are available in different constructions and shapes to suit skill level, age, and water conditions.
- Beginner bodyboards: Designed with extra buoyancy and a wider shape to provide stability. These boards are ideal for children, families, and first-time users learning to ride waves safely.
- Intermediate bodyboards: Offer a balance of control and responsiveness, suitable for riders who want to improve technique and ride slightly larger waves with confidence.
- Performance bodyboards: Built for experienced riders, these models focus on speed, manoeuvrability, and precision. They are often lighter and more responsive in powerful waves.
- Kids bodyboards: Smaller in size with softer constructions, designed to suit shorter height and lighter weight while remaining easy to control in shallow water.
Together, these styles ensure there is a bodyboard available for every age, ability, and water environment.
Materials and How They Work
The materials used in bodyboards directly affect buoyancy, durability, and performance.
- EPS foam: Lightweight and buoyant, making it a common choice for beginner and recreational bodyboards.
- HDPE or slick bottoms: Help the board glide smoothly across water and improve speed when riding waves.
- Deck materials: Soft top surfaces improve comfort and grip, especially when riding in a prone position.
- Stringers (in some boards): Add strength and control, helping the board maintain shape during repeated use.
These materials combine to create a bodyboard that feels stable, comfortable, and easy to control in the water.
Certain features help improve comfort, safety, and usability.
- A non-slip deck helps maintain grip while riding waves.
- Rounded edges improve stability and make the board easier to handle.
- A lightweight construction reduces fatigue during longer sessions.
- Durable materials help the bodyboard withstand repeated exposure to salt water and sunlight.
- Bright or contrasting colours improve visibility in busy water areas.
Together, these features help ensure the bodyboard performs reliably and remains enjoyable to use over time.
Different water activities benefit from different bodyboard designs.
- Beach holidays and family use: Beginner-friendly bodyboards with extra buoyancy and soft tops offer comfort and safety for mixed ability use.
- Small to moderate waves: Intermediate boards provide better control and glide while remaining forgiving.
- More powerful waves: Performance bodyboards offer improved speed and responsiveness for confident riders.
- Pools and calm water: Lightweight bodyboards are ideal for recreational play and confidence-building sessions.
Choosing a bodyboard that matches how and where you plan to use it helps maximise enjoyment and safety.

Boogie board, body board or paddle board - what is the difference?
- A Boogie Board is the same as a body board - the only difference is the brand name. Typically boogie boards are cheaper than body boards – usually attracting people that are just starting to get into wave riding. Whereas bodyboards are designed for all levels – kids, beginners, and advanced riders. Paddle Boarding - also known as SUP - has grown in popularity over the last few years. Although paddleboards are similar in shape to surfboards, they're much larger in size and weight. The goal of paddleboarding is to stand or kneel continuously on the board, while using a paddle for stability and movement.

Why use a bodyboard leash?
- A leash prevents you from losing your board. It’s also a great safety tool. If you come off your board you’ll have a ready-made flotation in arms reach should you need it. Most of our surfboards come with them attached but they’re also available to buy on their own.

How do I look after my bodyboard?
- Your bodyboard will last for a long time if it’s taken care of properly. Keep your bodyboard out of the heat, the direct sunlight will cause it to lose its shape. If you’re spending time at the beach cover your board with a wet towel or buy a cover for it. And, wash your board board after each use and store it somewhere safe where it can lay flat without anything on top. This will prevent the board from losing its shape.
